Open/Closed for the week of August 1-7

Despite the short week, I’ve got a whopping 12 new spots for you to check out this weekend, with a lot of activity particularly on the Danforth.

In addition, there are not-to-be-missed events, many accompanied by beer. 

Here’s the very latest:

Open:

Acqua Dolce Resto Venue
50 Prince Edward Island Cres.

The new resto at the CNE (formerly Gossip) comes with a waterfront patio and homemade Italian cuisine.

Amico Sushi & Grill
598 College St.

Expect a blend of Japanese and Western fare served tapas style, including: Bul-na ($13) Korean-Bulgogi, veggies, jalapeno, cheddar on nacho chips; Sea Honey ($13) Pan-fried shrimp, scallop, mussels and vegetables, honey butter; and Unagi Donburi($15) B.B.Q. fresh water eel on a bowl of rice with house sweet sauce.

Bistro Normandie   
820 Danforth Ave.

The Danforth got a new French patisserie with homemade items including quiche, soup and sandwiches. Also available: goodies imported straight from France.

In the mood for steak and seafood? Hoggs Hollow newest restaurant (previously Trapper’s) has got you covered.

Bread & Roses Bakery Café 
508 Danforth Ave.

Taking over the former Crema Coffee danforth spot, you can still expect coffee and pastries here.

Brigantino’s… on the Danforth
401 Danforth Ave.

Brigantino’s Trattoria in Windsor is getting a location in the 6ix, opening Friday – just in time for Taste of the Danforth naturally.

The traditional Italian restaurant will have a similar menu – pastas, meat and seafood – save the pizza.

De Frantic Monkey Cafe Bar  
799 College St.

Little Italy’s new coffee shop also serves up sandwiches.

Fountain 
60 Sudbury St.

Part of Recess on Sudbury, the new soda fountain, ice cream bar and diner serves breakfast items (The Benny Split $16, Cereal Box Toast $14) as well as lunch and dinner fare (Fountain Fish & Chips $14, Grilled Cheese & Iced Tomato Soup $12).

Hunter’s on the Danforth Pizza & Souvlaki House
674 Danforth Ave.

Feel like pizza AND Greek food? You’re in luck thanks to Hunter’s Pizza, opened just Tuesday.

You may know their outpost in Scarborough. And while you’ll find the same menu items up the Danny, you’re still paying Scarborough prices - Spaghetti & Meat Sauce ($10.50), 7 oz. Homeburger ($5.95), Large Greek Salad ($7.25).

L.A. Boil Seafood
2661 Dundas St. W.

Mississauga West joins the seafood boil craze with the arrival of L.A. Boil. This is the first of five locations set to open.

Lan Zhou Ramen
185 Dundas St. W.

It’s said that eating soup on a hot day can actually cool you down. This new ramen spot arrives just in time.

Nice Pan Rolled Ice Cream
247 Augusta Ave.

Just down the block from Frosty Roll , comes another rolled ice cream spot. This time, it’s made with fresh fruit and berries straight from Kensington Market.

Closed:

Avli on the Danforth has closed after a long reign on the strip.

Café Fiorentina has closed their Broadview and Danforth location after five years, but will reopen down the road at 463 Danforth (formerly Cafffe Greco) in the fall.

The Saint Tavern on Ossington closed on Monday but will reopen elsewhere in the city. In its place, King Street Food Company ((Buca, Bar BucaJacobs & Co SteakhouseThe Saint TavernJamie’s Italian)  will open La Banane with chef and chocolatier extraordinatre Brandon Olsen. Stay tuned.

And sadly, Silverstein’s Bakery - maker of phenomenal ryes and other breads – has closed after 100 years.

News:

Congratulations to Sean MacDonald of Market Restaurant in Calgary. He is the only Canadian and one of 20 young chefs who will proceed to the S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2016 Grand Finals.

Events:

Muskoka Brewery is celebrating their 20th birthday tonight with 20 breweries, fabulous food + entertainment, and you’re invited!
